These proportions may not be exactly as per the original Hemingway Daiquiri, but We have come across many different ‘original’ Hemingway Daiquiri recipe suggestions.  Not knowing for certain which the true original is, We chose the one where less fruit would be wasted.

3 shots   Bacardi 8 Year old Rum
¾ shot    maraschino liqueur
Juice from 1 fresh Lime
Juice From 1/2 Grapefruit

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled large highball glass.

Now for those who do not know Earnest Hemingway was a diabetic, and hence there is no sugar in the recipe.  We are not diabetic, and to be honest, We find this recipe a little tart.  So We thought We would ’sloe’ it down a bit (pun intended) and give the recipe some sweetness and a little more rum for balance.

 
Colour/nose: Old Gold. Quite perfumed, with evidence of maturity: orange peel, honey, caraway, aniseed, mint. Light oak. Very clean.

 
Palate: Mix of sweet spices with ripe apricot and banana. Medium-bodied, gentle and poised.

 
Finish: Soft and mellow.

 
Conclusion: A really lovely rum. Proof that Bacardi can compete at the upper end.

BACARDI 8 Year Old Rum is a premium, golden, sipping rum, aged for a minimum of 8 years.
This prolonged ageing allows a concentration of flavours, via evaporation, and extended contact with charred wood causing tannins to diffuse into the rum.

To fully appreciate the complexity of BACARDI 8 Year Old Rum it should be consumed neat or over ice. However, it’s well-developed flavours stand out extremely well and provide real depth to any rum cocktail.

This delicious drink oozes with citrus notes, but subdued with hints of vanilla.

Think of a Daiquiri on steroids complemented with a slap on the back from a  Treacle.

Objective Notes

A distinctive aroma from this reddish amber colored rum permeates a room. Unique smells of vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and light orange citrus. A tasting friend once mentioned they were able to identify this rum from several feet away just based on it’s fragrance.  Pyrat XO Rum is very distinguishable with a bouquet of wonderful and unique flavors. This complex rum envelopes your tongue and whole mouth with the essence of citrus, cinnamon, caramel, and vanilla. A slight bit of warmth up font and a smooth finish leaves you with a smile on your face and you looking forward to your next sip.

Taster’s Opinion
Terrence – “This is one of my favorite rums, period. It’s good on any occasion and can be enjoyed often. I like it neat and I also enjoy it in a special mixed drink called the XO Cocktail. You can find the recipe on the Patron Spirit’s excellent website. This rum has a flavor quite different from other rums. I consider it an incredible value, as its better than many rums costing almost twice it’s price. I recommend it to everyone and will always have a bottle on hand. Fortunately it is widely available!”

Resident DJ/label owner/producer Henry (orchard-music.com) hosts DJs from across the Musical spectrum who weave brass into 8 hours of music to keep you on your feet. This month we have a very special Guest.

Subculture Sounds (i.e. Edan Feldman – Vazan) rose to notoriety through his flagship Twisted Hearts Nights in Nottingham which have enjoyed national media attention for being HAWSOME! His first single on Orchard “Tail Gater” is to be released in the next month and has already enjoyed support from the likes Uproot Andy. Expect a carnival atmosphere in the Redchurch as Edan mixes brass into his blend of baile funk/house/bashment/tropical bass and much more.

His sets appeal to any generation and cover nu disco, electro funk, hip hop, soul, house, re edits and much more besides. A purist at heart, Jonny’s outlook to Djing is all about the music and connecting with the audience.  Laptops are never on the agenda as he is a firm believer that a DJ’s job is all about keeping an eye on and engaging the crowd not staring into a screen.
